Together with Professors Bruce Mutsvairo, James Kennedy, and Dr. Wouter Omen, I’m supervising an exciting new PhD research project designed and undertaken by Reinier Vriend at Utrecht University. I will lead the supervision of one of the three subprojects within Reiner’s doctoral work. The focus of the subproject is understanding how academic knowledge about the Dutch slavery past is communicated in the contemporary Dutch media landscape. Reinier will be using methods inspired by digital ethnography to analyze how the increasingly platform-oriented media environment in which knowledge about the Netherlands’ colonial history is discussed shapes the communication of that knowledge. This will yield a discussion of how academic perspectives about the past are mediated through the lens of the present media landscape.
